Derry City’s hopes of playing in next season’s Europa League remain alive after Sligo Rovers defeated Shamrock Rovers in yesterday’s Ford FAI Cup semi-final.
Sligo are in third place in the league and if they win the cup, to be played in the Aviva Stadium at the start of next month, it would mean the team in fourth place would gain a place in Europe.
Derry are currently in fourth place, three points ahead of Shamrock Rovers. Both sides meet in the Brandywell this Saturday and a win for the home side would mean a point from their last two games against St Patrick’s Athletic and Limerick would secure fourth spot.
However, qualification will rely on Sligo, who defeated Shamrock Rovers 3-0 in the semi-final yesterday, winning the cup.
Sligo’s opponents in the final will be Drogheda United who defeated Dundalk 1-0 in yesterday’s other semi-final. The game turned in Drogheda’s favour in the 28th minute when Dundalk had two players sent off within a three minute period, the second for a mistimed tackle in the penalty area with the spot kick duly converted.
