The future of a Derry secondary school earmarked for closure next year is to be raised at Stormont later today.
Local SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey is question Education Minister John O’Dowd about the future of Immaculate Conception College during Education Question Time.
The Education Minister will have the final say on whether or not the school will close its doors after Gerry Lundy, chief executive of the Catholic Council for Maintained Schools (CCMS) proposed the best option would be a “phased closure” of the Trench Road site beginning in September next year.
Parents of pupils at the school have formed an action group and set up a Facebook page in a bid to persuade the authorities to keep the school open.
Concerned parents are to write to Pope Francis in an effort to save the school, pointing to recent remarks in which he stressed the importance of Catholic education.
One parent said pupils and staff “don’t know where they stand.”
She added: “Fingers crossed for John O’Dowd, if he has any heart he will take a long hard think what mess this is going to have on everybody.”
