A tribute night to Patrick Friel Curran, the young Derry man who died recently in America, raised over £4,000 for a school for destitute children to be built in his memory in India.
The event, held in Pitchers at Foyle Golf Centre, raised a total of £4,200 which is to be handed over to local charity Action With Effect which will oversee the building of the school.
Patrick died suddenly in New York just under two weeks ago. Following his death numerous fundraising events were held to help his family bring his body home.
At his funeral – one of the biggest held in Derry in recent years – Patrick’s family announced the money needed had exceeded what was required and the excess, and returns from future fundraising, would go to finance the building of the school in his memory.
There are also plans to set up a “Bring Patrick Home” charity to help heartbroken families who find themselves in the same position as Patrick’s.
The organisers of Saturday night’s fundraiser have thanked the local businesses to donated prizes which included an M&S hamper, six bags from Bags Beautique, Lipsy Dress from Chocolate, spray tan from Only Skin Deep, £50 vouchers from McDonalds, Gift Box, Bentley, Timber Quay, Sootyolive, Clean4U, £30 Exchange voucher, £25 Bistro 9 voucher, River Inn lunch voucher, Bowling Alley vouchers, £20 Primrose voucher, facial and sports massage (Terri Harkin), Tanning Rooms spray tan and eye lashes, neck and back massage (Co.Co Beauty), five driving lessons with Argyle Motoring and a meal for two and a bottle of Tequila and meal for two and case of Corona at Guapo.
