Calling on Derry’s City of Culture Legacy Plan to provide a “clear statement of intent,” local Sinn Fein Councillor Barney O’Hagan has called for a two-day event to showcase local talent.

Cllr O’Hagan said: “Many conversations and consultation events have taken place over recent months on the City of Culture 2013  Legacy. When the Legacy Plan is launched it should provide a clear statement of intent.

“Declaring hopes and aspirations are fine, but we require more.  The Derry Legacy Plan should demonstrate purpose.”

Cllr O’Hagan said legacy must include the corporate and “civic city” and it had to be about its people.

He added: “Yes, we want to sell the City to visitors but legacy must also be about improving the lives of those who live here, and providing them with opportunities.

“We have a wealth of local talent and we should provide a showcase event, possibly over two days where local people can enjoy local acts and those local acts get to show to a wider public audience just what they can do.

“We should invite those from the City who have already been successful to share their knowledge with those who still aspire to be successful and then provide them with a stage to show just what they can do.”

He concluded: “Spending local money on local people is a good investment.”
