Sea Lavender, which run until Saturday next, 12 October, has been described both as “a torrent of beautifully imagined writing” and “a lyrical evocation of the sustaining power of love.”
The moving drama tells the story of a Yorkshire cobbler awaiting execution after trying to gain entry into the besieged city, while an embittered aristocrat, the cobbler’s rival in love, dines alone in his stately home.
As the men’s stories unfold, the reality of the Siege, and the consequences of obsessive love swept up in the tide of history come vividly alive.
The play stars Stephen Hagan, best-known for his role as the scheming Ryan Hathaway in the BBC hit series The Cut.
Raised in Green Island in County Antrim, Hagan made an acclaimed West End debut in the hit Tony and Olivier-nominated play End of the Rainbow, playing Judy Garland’s much younger fitth and final husband Mickey Deans.
He has just completed a season at the Royal Shakespeare Company and has worked with such illustrious directors as Terry Johnson, Trevor Nunn, Greg Doran and Peter Stein during what has been a rapid rise to be seen as one of the most exciting young actors of his generation. ‘
Formerly the associate director at Bristol Old Vic, Andy Hinds is currently the artistic director of Classic Stage Ireland and has directed classic and modern texts at the Abbey, Gate, Druid, Glyndebourne, Wexford Opera, and Scottish Opera.
His original plays include October Song, Crystal’s House, Bloodties, and verse translations of Iphigenia in Aulis and The Oresteia Trilogy. His new book Acting Shakespeare is to be published by Oberon Books in the Spring next year.
There will also be a unique chance to see Andy Hinds’ latest play Morning and Afternoon set in present-day Derry at 7.00pm on Saturday. It follows the lives of two very different men who fatefully reconnect in intensely personal stories exploring the enduring bonds of childhood.
