The “hounding” of motorists by private parking companies has been slammed by a Derry MLA.
Speaking in the Assembly yesterday, the SDLP’s Pat Ramsey said “furious drivers” were sharing their stories of being “hounded” by private parking companies, highlighting the “punitive fees” charged by these firms.
Mr Ramsey said: “The SDLP, as recently as May 2013, through the then Environment Minister Attwood, has pledged to step in to protect motorists being hounded by private companies demanding punitive parking fees of up to £140 for just 10 minutes.”
Mr Ramsey said motorists needed to be reassured anyone accessing their personal data was stringently assessed by the DVA to ensure it was necessary and proportionate.
He added: “There are serious concerns that the current safeguards aren’t protecting people’s privacy. The SDLP are pushing for a stronger code of conduct to do away with unfairly high fees.”
