The teenager who sustained serious injuries when he was struck by a car in the Templemore Sports Complex area of Derry last night has been transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast for treatment.
The 17-year-old pedestrian, a pupil at St Columb’s College and a member of City of Derry Spartans Athletic Club, was returning from a training run at the Sports Complex when was knocked down close to Templegrove on the Buncrana Road at shortly after 8.30pm.
He was initially rushed to Altnagelvin Hospital but has since been moved to the Royal in a critical condition.
The road between Branch Roundabout and the entrance of Templegrove was closed overnight while traffic was diverted via Coshquin Road and Whitehouse.
The road was reopened before daylight this morning and traffic is flowing normally.
Police have appealed to anyone who witnessed the collision or anyone who was travelling on the Buncrana Road around this time to contact them at Strand Road Police Station on 0845 600 8000.
