A break-in at a Waterside secondary school during which a television was has been condemned as a attack on the local community by the new Sinn Fein councillor for the area.
Cllr Bridget Meehan, who was co-opted by the party onto Derry City Council on Sunday last to replace long-serving Lynn Fleming, was speaking 37″ Sony flat screen television was taken from a youth club located in Immaculate Conception College.
Cllr Meehan said: “Thankfully, no major damage was caused to the school but an area which is used as youth club that was targeted and a TV stolen. The Whistle project uses the facility to run a youth club for the Top of the Hill area. They do this on a shoestring budget, with just two staff members and with the help of local volunteers in the area.
“The club is a labour of love in the area and provides a crucial service to the many young people who have no other youth facility available to them. Facilities are limited in the Top of the Hill, a reality that Sinn Féin has been trying to address for some time now.
Cllr Meehan concluded: “It is demoralising for the Whistle project and the whole community when a selfish act such as this happens. I support and admire the hard work of the Whistle and the community volunteers and I would encourage anybody who has information that might be helpful in finding the culprits to come forward.”
