Derry man Professor Patrick Johnston has been appointed the 12th President and Vice-Chancellor of Queen’s University Belfast.
Professor Johnston, from the Waterside area of Derry, has a very distinguished career as Dean of the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences at Queen’s and has the distinction of being one of the world’s foremost experts in cancer research.
The former St Columb’s College pupil has been congratulated by Derry MLA, Pat Ramsey, the SDLP’s Employment and Learning spokesperson.
Mr Ramsey said: “I want to send my warmest congratulations to Professor Patrick Johnston on his appointment as President and Vice-Chancellor of Queen’s University Belfast.
“I have no doubt that Professor Johnston, who has the advantage of knowing the university and its students so well, will make a tremendous contribution to advancing the reputation of the institution.”
Mr Ramsey also paid tribute to outgoing Vice-Chancellor Sir Peter Gregson who, he said, made an “outstanding contribution” to promoting the “educational excellence” of Queen’s University and its students.
