Householders in Derry have been warned to be on their guard after a spate of burglaries in the city.

Sinn Fein Cllr Eric McGinley.

The warning comes Sinn Féin Northland Councillor Eric McGinley who said a number of homes in the Ballymagroarty and Hazelbank areas had either been burgled or targeted for burglary.

Cllr McGinley added: “This type of crime can have a devastating impact on the victims leaving them feeling vulnerable and insecure as well as having to bear the cost of replacing household items and other valuables.”

Cllr McGinley said whilst the responsibility for these burglaries lay solely with the criminals involved, he urged householders to take sensible precautions to minimise the risk of their homes being invaded.

He concluded: “There are a number of measures which can be put in place and I would encourage residents to contact their local community safety partnerships for advice and help which make burglaries more difficult to carry out and bring greater peace of mind.”
