Police  carried out another major operation in Derry in the early hours of this morning as the search for murder suspect Kieran McLaughlin continues.

Wanted: Kieran McLaughlin.

On the run: Kieran McLaughlin is armed and mentally unstable

McLaughlin (58) was named by police as the main suspect in the shooting dead  of Barry McCrory (35) in an upstairs flat in Shipquay Street on Thursday last. Mr McCrory’s partner who was in the apartment at the time was uninjured but was left highly traumatised.

The latest search began shortly after midnight last night and was centred round a house in the Rossnagalliagh area. While the search was ongoing, police checkpoints were set up at both ends of Glengalliagh Road and Skeoge Road.

A small plane also circled the area during the operation.

The search of the home ended after 2.00am and nothing was found.

The previous night, residents in nearby Ederowen Park said a search operation in their estate came after McLaughlin visited the area to return a car he had borrowed from a neighbour of is daughter’s who lives in the area.

On Friday night, members of the Garda’s elite armed response unit surrounded a house in the Brae Road near Burnfoot in Inishowen after receiving a report McLaughlin had be held up there.

Armed police stormed the house after an 11 hour “stand off” only to find there was no one in the property.

Mr McCrory’s funeral will take place tomorrow morning in St Joseph’s Church, Galliagh.
