The mother of Derry murder victim, Barry McCrory, has said she hopes there will be a peaceful conclusion to the hunt for the man suspected of killing her son.
Ann McCrory’s 35-year-old son, Barry, was shot dead by a lone gunman in a flat in Shipquay Street on Thursday morning last.
Police in the city have named former INLA member Kieran McLaughlin as the man they want to speak to in relation to the killing, which police have described as a “brutal execution.”
Since the killing, a massive manhunt on both sides of the border has failed to locate the 58-year-old who police believe is armed.
Speaking before her son’s funeral, which took place in St Joseph’s Church in Galliagh this morningl, heartbroken Mrs McCrory said she had nothing to say to the man suspected of killing her son but hoped the ongoing sitution would end peacefully.
She said her son, who had ovrer 100 criminal convictions in the court, was “not the worst of the worst.”
She said: “I hope Barry is in Heaven and is at peace with himself. No matter what anybody else thought about my son, at the end of the day he was my son. He was never the worst of the worst in this town. He had his faults like a lot of other wee young fellas.
“He was trying very hard to put his life together and, of recent, was very happy, very content with himself, fearing no one. We knew no organisation was looking for Barry and he was happy to go about his day to day business.
“After he came out of jail he was in Dublin for quite a while. There are kind things Barry was doing that people did not see or know about. Homewise, he was very protective of me. He never missed a birthday or an anniversary he was a loving father to his son.”
Mrs McCrory said she had “no message” for the man suspected of killing her son.
However, she said: “I really don’t want to comment. We just want to be left in peace to bury our son and hope the whole situation will have a peaceful ending for everyone.
