The funeral takes place this morning of Barry McCrory, the Derry man shot dead in the city centre on Thursday last.
Mr McCrory (35) was gunned down by a lone gunman in a flat in Shipquay Street. His partner, who was in the apartment at the time, escaped injury but was left highly traumatised.
Police described the killing as a “brutal execution” and took the unusual step of naming and issuing a photograph of Kieran McLaughlin (58) as the chief suspect in the murder.
Mr McCrory had over 100 court convictions. Yesterday, his mother Anne acknowledged her son was “no angel” but said nothing could justify his killing and that she was struggling to come to terms with what happened.
The detective leading the investigation, Chief Inspector Ian Harrison, said McLaughlin’s family were supporting his direct appeal to McLaughlin to hand himself into police.
McLaughlin has been on the run since the killing and remains on the run.
Mr McCrory’s remains will be taken from his parents home in Cornshell Fields in the Ballyarnett area for 10.00am Requiem Mass in St Joseph’s Church in Galliagh.
