Derry’s Darron Gibson has said he is “devastated” after learning the injury he picked up in the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualifier on Tuesday night could see him miss the rest of the season.
The Everton midfielder was stretchered off in the first half in the Republic’s 3-1 win over Kazakhstan at the Aviva Stadium. A scan yesterday confirmed he had ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament that required surgery which will see him facing a lay-off of up to nine months.
The 25-year-old, who was only playing his second game for the Republic after ending his self-imposed exile following the departure of Giovanni Trapattoni, collapsed during the first half , requiring several minutes of on-field treatment before being stretchered off.
Thanking fans for their messages of support, he said he was “devastated” and faced a “long road ahead” but would return “fitter and stronger.”
The injury comes as a blow to Gibson after he missed the start of the season with a previous knee injury.
