The Derry Brigade of a group calling itself the “IRA,” has claimed responsibility for last week’s attempted mortar bomb attack on Derry’s police headquarters.

Forensic officers carrying out an examination of Lawrence HIll following the attempted mortar attack on Strand Road police station.

Around 1,000 people were evacuated from homes close to Strand Road police station following the discovery of the viable device on Lawrence Hill late on Thursday night.

In a statement to the Irish News, the group said it successfully launched a Mk2 mortar at the station.

The group also said it was behind the placing of bombs close to the offices of Derry City Council in September last year.

Derry police last week released CCTV footage of a man they believed to be planting those bombs.

The “IRA” is believed to have been formed following the merger of the Real IRA, Republican Action Against Drugs (RAAD) and a number of dissident republicans from the Tyrone area.
