Some of the biggest names in international cinema, including Oscar winning director Danny Boyle, BAFTA winner Paul Greengrass and Pulitzer Prize winning writer and actor Sam Shepard will be in Derry next month for a programme of film screenings and special events, entitled Cinema City.
Cinema City will be presented by the Culture Company and the Nerve Centre, in association with the University of Ulster, BFI, BAFTA, Film Hub NI, NWRC and the Foyle Film Festival.
With venues including Brunswick Moviebowl, the Nerve Centre, Ebrington Square, St Columb’s Hall, the Masonic Hall, the Apprentice Boys Memorial Hall, the Rath Mor Centre, Foyle Theatre as well as local community centres and libraries, Derry is set to become a city of cinema throughout November.
The event will mark the return of Danny Boyle to the city after 17 years, during which he achieved international acclaim with films such as Trainspotting, 28 Days Later and Slumdog Millionaire. He was also the man behind the stunning opening ceremony of the London Olympics last year.
BAFTA winning director Paul Greengrass will attend a special screening in Brunswick Moviebowl of his new film, Captain Philips.
Oscar winning actor and screenwriter Sam Shepard and acclaimed German director Wim Wenders will attend a screening of their classic movie, Paris, Texas in Brunswick Moviebowl as part of the Foyle Film Festival.
Following a screening of his debut feature film, Angel, in the Nerve Centre on 19 November, Oscar nominated actor Stephen Rea will discuss his long standing collaboration with Irish director Neil Jordan.
Cinema City will begin on 1 November with a weekend of horror movies, including a pop-up screening in the Nerve Centre of Shaun of the Dead.
Cinema City is supported by Film Hub NI. Film Hub NI is led by Film Hub Lead Organisation QFT as part of the BFI Film Audience Network and funded by British Film Institute through National Lottery Funding.
