The construction of 250 social houses in the Lenamore area is “good news” for Derry, a local councillor has said.
Cllr Tony Hassan, Sinn Féin housing spokesperson, has welcomed the news from Apex Housing that they intend to build the homes at Skeoge next year.
Cllr Hassan said the announcement was a “good news story” for social housing provision in the city it was welcomed by the hundreds of people on the homeless waiting list.
He added: “I have been campaigning for years for social homes to be built on the Skeoge lands, so it’s great to see things are moving in the right direction.
“Over the last number of years there wasn’t much land for social housing but now the Skeoge lands and theH2 site at Buncrana Road are available and I am hopeful that the homes which are being built by Apex Housing will get planning approval in the next few months.”
Cllr Hassan said the number of people waiting for a home in the city had increased dramatically over the past few years and these houses would go some way to alleviating that problem.
He concluded: “I will continue that lobby at every opportunity to ensure that the need for new social housing schemes is kept firmly on the agenda in Derry. And again I welcome Apex for the great job they are doing in providing social housing in the Derry City Council area.”
