Derry City will be aiming to be “party poopers” when they take on newly-crowned Airtricity Premierhip champions St Patrick’s Athletic in Dublin tonight.
Pat’s sealed their first league title in 14 years when they defeated Sligo Rovers last weekend and Derry will be hoping they will be suffering a celebratory hang-over for tonight’s clash in Inchicore as the Brandywell club aims to tighten their grip on a fourth place finish and a possible European qualification spot.
City are currently are three points ahead of fifth-placed Shamrock Rovers who travel to take on UCD tonight.
The permutations for who can take the much-sought-after fourth spot are numerous but Derry boss Declan Devine will have encouraged his side to keep the possibility of qualification with their own hands.
Of course, finishing fourth does not guarantee participation in next season’s Europa League as that possibility relies on Sligo Rovers winning the FAI Cup.
On the field of play, Devine must do without the services of midfielder Ruairi Higgins through injury. However, he will welcome back Ryan McBride to the centre of his defence after suspension.
Tonight’s game kicks off at 7.45pm and will be broadcast live on the two local radio stations, BBC Radio Foyle and Drive 105.
Inchicore will host one of the biggest crowds of the season as Pat’s fans are expected to turn out in force for the presentation of the championship trophy which will be made after the final whistle.
