Three schools in Derry are to receive millions of pounds to upgrade their buildings.
St Columb’s College, Broadbridge Primary School and Newbuildings Primary School are among 50 schools throughout the North who are being given £106m to carry out major upgrades.
Schools which needed more than minor repairs but not a new school were invited to apply for funding.
The money, from the School Enhancement Programme (SEP), will fund refurbishment and extension projects.
The value of the individual projects range from £500,000 to £4m.
Education Minister said the SEP funding would go to provide improvements such as permanent buildings to replace mobiles, refurbishment of existing accommodation and the provision of sports facilities.
He added the purpose of the programme was to ensure provision of the best possible education estate for ochildren and young people, within the budget available.
He added: “The SEP is designed to enable the refurbishment or extension of existing schools and I am pleased to announce today that 50 schools have been informed that their applications have been successful and will be advanced to planning.
“This represents a potential investment in the estate of £106m over the next two to three years.”
Mr O’Dowd said the successful projects were all consistent with the emerging area plans and the scale of the investment underlines his continuing commitment to improving the schools estate.
He added the announcement was “good news” for the pupils, staff and school communities involved, as well as being a welcome boost for the local construction industry.”
