Several hundred people have attended a public rally in Derry to protest against the closure of the Woodlands Language Unit based at Belmont House School.
There has been outrage in a number of quarters since Education Minister John O’Dowd announced last month that the specialised unit was to close as a result of an amalgamation with Foyleview School in a project costing in the region of £7.5 million.
In attendance at the lunchtime rally in Guildhall Square were parents and staff who are angered at the decision to go ahead with the development despite strong opposition.
Among the speakers was SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey who criticised Mr O’Dowd for taking the decision of civil servants.
