Race 3 Day 8: The Derry “LondonDerry” Doire was the third yacht to pass into the Southern Ocean as the fleet in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race makes its way from Brazil to South Africa.
It certainly wasn’t skipper Sean McCarter’s original plan but with the South Atlantic High being so far south and the fact that they sailed into unfavourable and decreasing wind last night, their hand was called.
Sean explained what happened next: “We gybed south and spent about eight hours heading at 90 degrees to Cape Town.
“Although the obvious and expected results of this were a pummelling on the leaderboard, we are happy with our southerly position and hope to see some gains over the next few days or so.”
He added: “With 21 knots of true wind and have since been surfing through the Southern Ocean at speeds of up to 20 knots.”
