The body managing Derry’s City of Culture programme has been rocked by a third resignation from its governing board in less than a month.
Ana Leddy, a former head of radio for Irish national broadcaster RTE and editor of BBC Radio Foyle, said she was resigning in protest against plans to close the Culture Company three months earlier than originally planned in March next year.
She also voiced concern the move would affect the legacy impact of the city’s year-long festivities as the UK’s first City of Culture.
Earlier this month, Clare McColgan, who was reponsible for implementing the legacy progamme following Liverpool’s designation as European Captal of Culture in 2008, stepped down from the Derry board together with the Tate Gallery’s Anna Cutler who said she was resigning for personal reasons.
The resignations are the latest blows to the Culture Company which was refused additional funding of £1.3 million from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment in May.
The request followed concerns that poor ticket sales and lower than expected sponsorship had contributed to a £611,000 deficit in the £16.4 million year-long event after its first four months.
