There will be a double helping of fireworks at this year’s Banks of the Foyle Halloween carnival in Derry – as the talented members of local performing arts group Fireworks limber up for a dance extravaganza to remember.
The group will be joining the 600 local performers to stage an explosive festival finale, with a special piece of choreography for the Curious Carnival of the Lost Souls Parade.
The carnival parade is the showpiece event in a week-long programme of fearsome festivities featuring a whole host of family friendly events, with everything from the Ghostly Galleon tall ship, to the bewitching world of fire and flame, Inferno, which is set to totally transform the landscape at Ebrington.
Fireworks is run by local performing arts instructor Nadine Hegarty, who revealed the children have been practicing for weeks in the build up to the city’s most spooktacular annual event.
“We have about 30 people of all ages involved in the carnival and of all levels of accomplishment,” she explained. “We have children who do ballet, hip hop, tap dance and drama, and we have tried to produce a piece of choreography that incorporates all their individual skills.
“The range of talent is unbelievable and the children are all having a fantastic time. It’s just as much about the creative process as the end product for us. We have five-year-olds learning to choreograph, drama students learning to dance, and we even have some creepy cheerleaders. I don’t want to give too much away but we’re really getting into the Hallowe’en spirit with some gruesome and ghoulish routines.”
Don’t miss Fireworks and a whole host of ghosts, ghouls and devilish delights as they take to the streets of scary Derry at 7.00pm on Hallowe’en night, October 31, for the biggest carnival parade ever hosted by the city.
The fun continues with the real thing – a glittering fireworks extravaganza over the River Foyle at 8.00pm, leaving plenty of time to catch the magical Shapeshifters Ball in the Guildhall at 9.00pm.
