The long running problem over lack of toilet provision at newly-created Ebrington site in Derry is a step closer to being resolved, Councillor Barney O’Hagan has said.
Speaking after receiving correspondence from ILEX on the issue, the Sinn Fein representative said it was “unacceptable” the site had been developed without public amenities.
Cllr O’Hagan said: “I had received numerous complaints from members of the public about the absence of toilet facilities, at the Ebrington site. Many people find it unacceptable that a publicly funded body such as ILEX could develop such a signature project without incorporating public amenities, especially toilet facilities.”
Cllr O’Hagan said the area was fast becoming a major tourist attractions and with its close proximity to the Peace Bridge was also popular with the local population and it was inconceivable that public health requirements would not dictate the necessity of providing public toilet and parent and baby changing facilities at such a venue.
He added: “I contacted ILEX and raised the concerns of the general public and received correspondence today to say that whilst there is limited access to toilets during the day managed by a coffee amenity on the site they will review night-time provision with the security company G4S.”
Cllr O’Hagan concluded: “They also went on to say they are now seeking to bring forward proposals for the development of the site, which would see more permanent facilities in use. This would be subject to business case approval and they hope to have these in place for the summer of 2014.”
