Tributes have been paid to one of Derry’s best known sporting coaches, Andy McClea, who died at the weekend.
The tributes have been led by Foyle SDLP Mark Durkan who said he was “saddened” at the death of one of the North West’s most respected characters.
Mr Durkan added: “His boundless enthusiasm and energy was matched by his lively and quick sense of humour.
“Andy was a great encourager not just in his coaching life as an advocate and administrator in the sporting community but also as an inspiration and example to many.
“He brought his insistently positive outlook to every project and all whom he met. In difficult and dark times for the city and politics here he was always ready to counsel for better days and better ways to come.
“He was a man of honest charm and discreet charity who was respected by all because he truly respected and cared for all. You never left a conversation with Andy without feeling topped up with decency or purpose. Even his funny put-downs were to pick you up.
Like so many across the North West I am grateful for the personal encouragement and counsel which Andy McClea always offered.”
Mr Durkan added: “As we mourn the loss of a complete gentleman we extend sincere sympathy to his wife Monica and his loving family at this very sad time.”
Mr McClea is survived by his wife and daughter Carol-Ann. His remains were taken from his home in Templegrove for 10.00am Requiem Mass in Holy Family Church
