One of the world’s most prestigious art events – the Turner Prize exhibition – will open in Derry later today – the first time in its 29 year history that it will have been held outside of England.
It will be run until 5 January next year at the old barracks in Ebrington as part of Derry’s City of Culture year-long celebrations and is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors.
Four artists are in contention for the award with the winner receiving £25,000 when the result is announced on 2 December next, an event to be screened lived on Channel 4. The other shortlisted artists will each receive £5,000.
Established in 1984, the Turner Prize is awarded to a contemporary artist under 50, living, working or born in Britain, who is judged to have put on the best exhibition of the last 12 months.
The shortlisted artists – London-based Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, David Shrigley from Glasgow, Laure Prouvost (France) and Berlin-based Tino Sehgal – are expected to attend tonight’s launch.
Ladbroke Bookmakers have made Shrigley 2/1 favourite to win the prize.
