Wigan Athletic have succeeded in their appeal against James McClean’s red card in the dying minutes of Latics’ clash with Blackpool on Saturday.
The former Derry City winger, who joined the Latics from Sunderland during the summer “transfer window,” was sent off for violent conduct after clashing with Blackpool defender Gary MacKenzie during his side’s 1-0
The referee didn’t signal for any offence initially but after consulting with his assistant, Mark Hayward showed a straight red card to the former Brandywell favourite.
Sky Sports football pundit Peter Beagrie had described the sending off decision as “ludicrous.”
A statement from Wigan confirmed the decision had been overturned and the 24-year-old was free to face Charlton Athletic this weekend.
The statement said: “The club can confirm that after submitting an appeal following James McClean’s red card at Blackpool, an independent regulatory commission convened by the FA has withdrawn his three match suspension for violent conduct.”
