Derry City Council is involved in “advanced” talks with the Department of Social Development (DSD) about creating a riverside park from Craigavon Bridge to Daisyfield, it has been revealed.
The announcement was made by Derry Mayor Cllr Martin Reilly who was welcoming the confirmation by Carál Ní Chuilín, Minister of Culture Arts and Leisure (DCAL), of £2 million funding for the Daisyfield-Showgrounds elements of the Foyle Valley Gateway Masterplan, as part of the regeneration of the Brandywell and surrounding area.
Mayor Reilly said the funding would significantly assist the Council and other agencies in their regeneration plans.
Derry City Council has already committed £2.7 million to the redevelopment of the Brandywell Stadium as part of the Foyle Valley Gateway Masterplan and as part of its long term legacy commitment to the area.
Mayor Reilly said DCAL and Derry City Council were working closely to secure monies as part of its commitment under the “To Promote Equality and Tackle Poverty and Social Exclusion” and were delighted that initial money was now available for the redevelopment of the Daisyfield.
He added: “This is a great news story for Derry and a great example of partnership working. This funding will have a massive impact in terms of promoting social inclusion and tackling areas of deprivation in our city. This is much needed investment for the area and sees the start of the first phase of wider regeneration work in the Brandywell and surrounding areas.”
In addition, he said Derry City Council was “in advanced discussions” with DSD, through the North West Development Office, regarding the proposed development of the riverside park from Craigavon Bridge to Daisyfield.
He stressed the proposal was subject to an outline business case and departmental approval but signified a huge level of commitment from all organisations working together on delivery of the Foyle Valley Gateway Masterplan and for a better future for the city.
