Those responsible for attacking two PSNI officers with a pipe bomb in the Long Tower area of Derry on Tuesday night last have “nothing to offer the people of the city but misery,” Sinn Fein Councillor Patricia Logue has said.
The device, described by police as “crude” and capable of causing death or serious injury, failed to explode after it was thrown at the two officers in a police vehicle close to St Columba’s Church in Charlotte Street.
A number of families were evacuated from their homes overnight while army bomb disposal experts made the device safe.
Cllr Logue said: “Whoever left this device only succeeded in causing hardship to the local population. I would like to thank local community workers who helped residents out and opened up Dove House.”
She added: “We had families out of their homes all night. Some had to stay with relatives. This was very upsetting for many of the elderly residents and those with young families.”
Cllr Logue concluded: “It is obvious those behind leaving such devices are out of touch with the will of the vast majority of the people of Derry who want to move forward without this type of disruption.”
