Derry City Council have received further recognition for their budding floral displays after being presented with the President’s Trophy at the Northern Ireland Amenity Council Awards.
The accolade follows on from the city receiving the Gold Award at the recent Britain in Bloom contest.
The Amenity NI awards are presented annually to towns and cities across the North for their environmental projects.
Derry was awarded the prestigious President’s Trophy for its floral blooms in the regional final.
Derry Deputy Mayor Gary Middleton said was once again “good news” for the city.
Congratulating those involved, Deputy Mayor Middleton who collected the award with ground maintenance manager of Derry City Council, Danny McCartney, Cllr Middleton said the floral displays around the city created a “positive addition” to its walkways, arterial routes and urban parks.
He added: “Throughout a number of city centre locations, the additions of these floral blooms and planters have also added a touch if colour and a feeling of welcome.
“Formal recognition of this by receipt of the Trophy provides further endorsement of the wide opinion that this year, as we celebrate our year as City of Culture, the city has proudly revealed itself to our international visitors as a beautiful and welcoming place to live and visit.”
Continuing he said that this was a result of the combined efforts of Derry City Council’s Ground Maintenance and Street Cleansing Sections who work extremely hard year round to provide and maintain the eye catching, vibrant horticultural displays.
He added: “Congratulations once again to Danny and his team, the organizations involved in funding the initiative and the building owners who added the bloom displays to their façade, all adding to the feel good factor. Keep up the good work and let’s incorporate the flourishing Pride in our City campaign as part of the legacy from this year.”
