Derry City go into their last game of the season tonight knowing a win keeps them in contention for a possible Europa League spot next season.
City are currently in fourth place – a position that, if Sligo win the FAI Cup next week – will guarantee European football at Brandywell next summer.
However, Shamrock Rovers are only one point behind and Derry boss Declan Devine knows they cannot afford any slip-ups against Limerick City at the Brandywell tonight if their hopes of playing in next season’s Europa League are to remain alive.
A draw or defeat to Limerick and a Rovers win over Sligo Rovers – who play Drogheda in next week’s FAI Cup final – will see the Candy Stripes’ chances of European competition dashed.
And, of course, a fourth place finish for either Derry or Rovers will be count for nothing if Sligo fail to add the FAI Cup to the league title they won last season.
Derry centre-back Shane McEleney is rated extremely doubtful for the clash against Limerick.
The defender, who missed last week’s draw at champions St Patrick’s Athletic, is still struggling with flu like symptoms and as of Wednesday he had not trained.
Tonight’s game has a 7.45pm kick-off and will be broadcast live on BBC Radio Foyle and Drive 105.
