The closure of a play park in the Galliagh area of the city is the result of a spate of vandalism, it has emerged.
Derry City Council said the closure of the Heather Road facility had been made in the interest of health and safety.
A council spokesperson said work would be carried out to repair the damage with a view to the park reopening again tomorrow.
A spokesperson said: “Earlier in this week Derry City Council maintenance staff made safe an area around a climbing structure which had been badly vandalised at the start of the week in order to keep the park open for the local children and families who use it.
“It is unfortunate that due to a number of different and relentless attacks on this safety fence within the park, throughout the duration of this week, the extent of the damage has been so great that we now have no choice but to close the park completely. ”
Apologising for any inconvenience caused, the council spokesperson said the temporary closure was deemed necessary and that the park is expected to be opened again to the public tomorrow.
