Sinn Fein in Derry has called for the Department of Finance to clarify the situation surrounding the future of public sector jobs at Waterside House in the city.
At least 80 jobs at the centre are under threat as a result of privatisation proposals.
The workers’ union, Northern Ireland Public Service Alliance (NIPSA) is to ballot workers on possible industrial action.
Sinn Fein Councillor Paul Fleming said there was a “genuine concern” amongst workers about the long term future of their jobs and to bring some clarity to the situation his party colleague Raymond McCartney MLA had written to the Department of Finance and Personal (DfP) and placed a number of questions to the DfP on the issue.
The questions are:
“If management has confirmed to staff that jobs will be lost at Waterside House, what is the minimum number of job losses projected by the department and what prior consultation with staff was carried out?
“What are the options for future service delivery of civil service pensions?
“What plans there are to outsource the pension’s administration function at civil service pensions?
“If business cases relating to the future of civil service pensions staff have been shared with trade union representatives.”
Cllr Fleming said it was workers knew what the future held for them particularly, the approach of Christmas.
He concluded: “We support the workers in their efforts to retain these jobs at Waterside House in Derry.”
