Would-be tree planters are receive a wealth of information courtesy of a special free woodland creation demonstration by the Faughan Valley Landscape Partnership Scheme.
Thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, this massive project aims to restore and enhance the natural and built heritage within the beautiful Faughan Valley.
Delivered by partners Derry City Council, the Rural Area Partnership in Derry (RAPID) and the Woodland Trust, one of the aims is to facilitate the creation of new native woodland.
Join the team for an indoors welcome on Wednesday 13 November at 2.00pm at the RAPID premises, located at the Old School, 2 Foreglen Road, Killaloo.
A bus will transport the group to a nearby private landowner’s site. Here forester Tony Johnston will demonstrate various tree planting techniques. Choice of tree species for different terrains, ground preparation and use of tree guards are just some of the items on the woodland agenda. Each participant will have the chance to plant a tree.
Landscape officer, Jonathan Henderson, said: “Farmers and landowners in the Faughan Valley have the fantastic offer of turning unproductive pockets of land into flourishing native woodland. We will be giving people the opportunity to experience woodland creation first-hand. It’s a chance to find out about all the help and advice on offer.”
The woodland creation day is free of charge and includes free refreshments. Booking in advance is essential. Contact Jonathan Henderson on 028 7133 7498; mobile 0771 869 4172; or email [email protected].
