The family of the young Derry man who died suddenly in New York last month have made “wonderful act of charity” to the fundraising campaign taking place to pay for the lifesaving surgery performed on Richard Quigley, the young Galliagh man who was critically injured in a hit-and-run accident in Bangkok on Thursday last.
Following the incident in Bangkok on this day last week, Richard, from Ederowen Park in Galliagh, underwent emergency surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain.
The 27-year-old, who has been working in Thailand as a barman for the last three years, is on the road to recovery and has been moved out of the intensive care unit at the Bangkok hospital where the lifesaving surgery was carried out.
Richard’s elder brother, who flew to be by his sibling’s bedside on Sunday last, said while Richard’s social security contributions covered his general medical expenses, they did not cover surgery procedures such as that carried out last week – estimated to cost in the region of £6,000.
Since the news broke, Richard’s friends and former work colleague’s at Da Vinci’s, have begun a fundraising campaign to help cover the cost the operation.
Among those who have donated to the fund are the family of Patrick Friel Curran, the young Derry man who died suddenly in New York last month.
Patrick had also undergone emergency surgery but unfortunately doctors were unable to save his life.
At the time, the Derry community came together to raise funds to help Patrick’s family cover the cost of bringing his remains home.
The generosity of the people was so great the amount raised far exceeded what was required which resulted Patrick’s family announcing the overflow was to be used to build a school for deprived children in India in his memory.
Stephen Quigley has revealed Patrick’s family have contributed to the fundraising to help pay for Richard’s medical expenses.
Thanking all those who have donated, he paid particular tribute to the Friel Curran family.
He said: “There are so many people doing so many things to help Richie and I want to thank you all so much. There is always a fear that you will forget to thank someone. But there is one family I can’t thank enough. The family of Patrick Friel Curran.
“Patrick’s mum called to the house to offer support and comfort and in a beautiful act of charity made a donation to help pay for Richard’s hospital bills. Such a kind and wonderful family to take the time to support Richard. Thank you with all the love of my family and Richard’s friends.”
Meanwhile, one of the items to be raffled at fundraiser being held for Richard in Da Vinci’s this Sunday night is an Argentinian football shirt signed by Barcelona star Lionel Messi, donated by Adam Stockman from the Ivory restaurant in Belfast.
Over 40 prizes will be up for grabs on the night including signed Glasgow Celtic and Derry City team shirts, beauty treatments, meal vouchers and hotel breaks.
