Drogheda United 2 Sligo Rover 3
Derry City will be playing in next season’s Europa League after Sligo Rovers defeated Drogheda United in one of the greatest ever finishes to an FAI Cup final.
The teams were tied at 2-2 and ten men each when Elding struck three minutes into the eight of injury time to clinch the cup.
Underdogs Drogheda took a shock lead in the 13th minute through Paul O’Connor.
Two goals in five minutes by Danny North put Sligo in front with less than five minutes to go.
However, Drogheda struck back through Ryan to equalise before Elding’s terrific finish ensured Derry City will be playing in next season’s Europa League.
As a result of finishing in fourth spot in the Airtricity Premiership, Derry needed Sligo to win the cup to guarantee European football at Brandywell next season.
