A fundraising night to support young Derry man Richard Quigley’s recovery after being critically injured in a hit and run incident in Thailand last week will be held in Da Vinci’s Spirit Bar this evening.
Richard is currenly making a slow recovery in a Bangkok hospital after the incident on Thursday of week last which resulted in him undergoing lifesaving surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain.
He has been moved out of intensive care and his elder brother, Stephen, who flew out to be by his bedside, has said doctors are pleased with his progress.
Richard (27), from Ederowen Park in Galliagh, has been working in the Thai capital as a barman for the last three years. While his social security payments cover his general medical expenses they do cover emergency treatment. Surgery alone cost in the region of £6,000.
Since news of Richard’s accident reached his hometown, his friends and former colleagues in Da Vinci’s, have got together to help cover his increasing medical costs.
Individuals and businesses not only from Derry but from throughout Northern Ireland have donated prizes for tonight’s fundraiser, sections of which are to be recorded to be shown to Richard to aid his recovery.
Andy O’Doherty, from Da Vinci’s, said the support for tonight’s event was “overwhelming.”
He said: “The support from local businesses and beyond has been overwhelming and without this support we could not proceed with the event. We want to thank everyone for their unbelievable support to date for Richie – phenomenal and very humbling. With the amount of interest in helping the cause this is going to be a massive night and a chance also to send a big collective message of best wishes to Richie.”
Doors open in the Spirit Bar at 9.00pm with a minimum cover charge of £5. Music will be provided by DJ Frisco.
Star prize will be a Argentinian international football jersey signed by Barcelona star Lionel Messi, the world player of the year donated by Adam Stockman from the Ivory restaurant in Belfast.
