David Austin is the proud owner of an Argentinian football jersey signed by Barcelona star Lionel Messi.
David won the world player of the year’s top at a fundraiser held last night for Derry man Richard Quigley who is currently recovering from critical injuries sustained in a hit and run accident in Thailand on Thursday of last week.
David was presented with the jersey by Andy O’Doherty, of Da Vincis, who hosted last night’s fundraiser.
The jersey was donated by Adam Stockman from the Ivory Restaurant in Belfast and was one of a number of prizes at last night’s event which raised £7,000.
Richard (27), from Ederowen Park in Galliagh, had to undergo emergency lifesaving surgery following the incident which occurred Bangkok on Thursday of last week. He has been working in the Thai capital as a barman for the past three years.
Richard’s brother Stephen who is at his bedside in a Bangkok hospital said: “A massive thank you to everyone who, in any way, contributed to last night’s fundraiser in Da Vincis and other events over the last week. It was a great night and £7,000 was raised. This will do wonders in helping Richard’s recover. It looks like everyone had a great time.”
He added: “Richie is improving a little every day and I am looking forward to telling him about everything that has been done back home.”
