HARD-pressed Derry families struggling to pay their bills are in for an even tougher winter – as some coal merchants slash 20% off the size of bags of fuel.
Shops, garage forecourts and static merchants in the city and surrounding areas are still offering 25kg bags of coal and slack.
But most of them have cut bag sizes to 20kg…. without cutting the price by 20%.
It’s a repeat of a move which happened in Co Donegal five years ago where 25kg bags of coal were phased out in favour of the smaller bags.
However prices weren’t cut.
With the price of coal increasing again in recent weeks, many families will struggle to heat their homes this winter.
Kelly’s Fuels in Derry say they have no plans to reduce their size of their bags.
