Strabane town centre is to get free wi-fi from next summer as a result of a £36,000 investment from the Department of Social Development.
The scheme has been welcomed by Cllr Ruairi McHugh, chairperson of Strabane District Council who described it as “another good news story for the town.”
He added Strabane District Council was delighted with the “significant investment” from the Department for Social Development.
He added: “Free wi-fi will ensure that our residents have access to information ‘on the go’ and that Strabane can compete in this rapidly growing digital economy.
“This investment is also a significant boost for our local businesses as this free connection will ensure that they can grow and attract new business.”
Confirming the investment, Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland said the installation of free wi-fi would bring Strabane into the digital age.
He added: “Wi-fi will significantly benefit visitors, shoppers and retailers alike during these difficult trading times. It will afford traders the opportunity to better promote their products and services on-line and assist customers in their search for goods.”
