The University of Ulster has been called on to explore the option of obtaining funding from European banks to finance the expansion at its Magee College campus in Derry.
The call has come from local Sinn Féin Councillor Mickey Cooper after it was revealed the University of Ulster’s new Belfast campus could be part-financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) to the tune of £150 million.
Cllr Cooper said: “I raised the need for the University of Ulster (UU) to explore European funding at Derry City Council last week. The Sinn Féin Minister for Education has given the UU preferred bidder status for the former Foyle College lands. I believe that the UU should also be exploring all options on this European initiative by attempting to access similar funding for expansion of the Magee campus.”
Cllr Cooper concluded: “The people of the North West have united in their call for Magee expansion. The lack of current spaces means that many Derry students have no choice but to study in other cities with many never returning here following graduation.”
