Work costing £310,000 to improve the appearance of the Lecky Road Flyover in Derry has got under way.
The work, which will last five weeks, is being carried out between the junctions of Abercorn Road and the Lecky Road.
Confirming the investment for the project, Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland said the refurbishment would remove some of the “harsher elements.”
Explaining the rationale behind the scheme the Minister McCausland said: “While the Flyover is a main thoroughfare in the city it is visually unattractive and these works will remove some of its harsher elements by upgrading the existing barriers, lighting and footpaths.
“The need to address the physical appearance of the flyover and reduce the severance effect it causes was highlighted in the Foyle Valley Gateway master plan which is one of the catalyst projects in the One Plan.”
Mr McCausland said the project would create a safer and more attractive environment and complement the recent upgrading of Rossville Street which was also delivered in partnership with the Department for Regional Development.
The work is being carried out by the DRD Roads Service and its Minister Danny Kennedy said the refurbishment was “indicative” of the Department’s “ongoing commitment” to maintain and upgrade the road infrastructure in the Derry area.
Mr Kennedy said temporary traffic management arrangements were required and he asked for the patience and co-operation of both residents and road users for the duration of the work.
