Small businesses in the greater Bogside area have been called on to step up security around their premises in the run up to Christmas.
The call comes from Sinn Féin Councillor Colly Kelly after a number of robberies and attempted robberies in the area in recent weeks.
Cllr Kelly said there was a growing in the area about the rise in the number of robberies of business premises over the past few weeks .
He added: “We had a similar spate of robberies in early 2012 and people are worried this is happening again particularly in the run up to Christmas.
“Small businesses are an easy target for individuals or criminal gangs looking to get their hands on money fast. In most occasions these robberies are over in seconds leaving staff traumatised for months after.”
Cllr Kelly added: “We cannot allow this to be become the norm in our city. I would call on anyone with information about those the criminal gangs responsible to bring it forward to the police. Those terrorising our communities need to be taken off the streets and taken before the courts.”
