A call for motorists to slow down and “respect” the speed limit on one of Derry’s busiest roads has been made by Sinn Féin Councillor Patricia Logue.
Cllr Logue said she was concerned at the number motorists who were ignoring the 30 mph limit on what she described as one of the busiest main arterial routes between Donegal and Derry city centre.
She added with traffic on the route expected to increase in the run up to Christmas residents were concerned at the behaviour of motorists.
Cllr Logue said: “Improvements have been made to Foyle Road in recent years to slow down the speed of traffic on the road and provide safe crossing points between its junction with Letterkenny Road and Craigavon Bridge.
“But residents and users of the park along the riverfront have raised concerns with me that many motorists simply ignore the 30 mph speed limit and some were actually overtaking within yards of the crossing points placing pedestrians in serious danger.”
Cllr Logue concluded: “I would make an urgent appeal to motorists as we approach the busy Christmas shopping period and with the dark mornings and nights upon us to slow down and respect the speed limit on Foyle Road.”
