The number of people emigrating from Derry is increasing on a yearly basis, newly released figures show.
The figures, provided by Finance Minister Simon Hamilton, show 8,000 people have left Derry – which has a population of 108,00 – over the last five years.
Last year, 1,745 emigrated with 1,711 leaving the previous year. In 2010, 1,713 left the city. In 2009, the figure was 1,405 and 1,438 in 2008.
However, in the Borough of Limavady emigration seems to have taken a downward trend. Last year, 245 left the area which has a population of 33,000. That compares to 275 in 2011, 345 in 2010, 311 in 2009 and a 398 in 2008.
The survey, commissioned by the National Youth Council of Ireland on emigration showed, between 21,000 and 26,000 leave Northern Ireland on a yearly basis.
