The announcement that over £300,000 is to be spent on improving the appearance of the Lecky Road Flyover in Derry is a “huge boost” to the city, according to Mayor Cllr Marin Reilly.
The work, costing £310,000 will last five weeks, is being carried out between the junctions of Abercorn Road and the Lecky Road.
Confirming the investment for the project, Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland said the refurbishment would remove some of the “harsher elements.”
Welcoming the refurbishment confirmation, Mayor Reilly said the investment would upgrade the appearance of the main arterial thoroughfare as well as supporting the previous investment from many government bodies to tackle dereliction in buildings, roads and infrastructure throughout the city.
Mayor Reilly added: “This work will also complement the recent Walled City Lighting Strategy which has been successful in illuminating a number of built heritage buildings in and around our historic walls.
“Plans for lighting the area under the Flyover along with improvement in its physical appearance will now be enabled with this funding.”
He concluded: “The flyover improvement work will add to the development over the last few years throughout the city and focus on creating a safer and attractive environment for both visitors, locals and nearby residents of the area.”
