Plans for a new park at Inverroe Gardens in Derry’s Creggan Estate will “completely transform” the area, a former mayor of the city has said.
Funding for the proposed park between Inverroe Gardens and Creggan Heights will be discussed at tomorrow’s monthly meeting of Derry City Council’s environmental services committee.
The Department of Social Development has already pledged £360,000 for the project and councillors will discuss whether to approve an application for £30,000 from the Council.
Sinn Fein Cllr Kevin Campbell said it was “golden opportunity” to redevelop the site, which has been used as a dumping ground and an area for bonfires in the past.
He added: “This is something the Triax neighbourhood management team have been working on for three years and I am delighted that it is nearing completion.”
Cllr Campbell, a former mayor of the city, concluded: “There have been a number of problems at this site in the past and this will really turn a negative into a positiv. £360,00 has already been committed to this project and if Council gives the green light to the additional £30,000 it would completely transform this area.”
