The Whitehouse and Groarty Roads on outskirts of Derry have reopened following a day-long policing operation in the area in which nothing was found.
The operation began this morning when a stretch of the busy Derry to Buncrana road was closed from Skeoge Road to Templemore Complex.
Coshquin Road, Groarty Road and Whitehouse Road were also sealed off as police carried out a search operation following a report of what they said was “suspicious activity” in the area.
While the bomb disposal unit was in attendance throughout the day, police have confirmed “nothing untoward” was found.
Hoever, a PSNI spokesperson asked that should come across a suspicious object they should not touch it and should contact police immediately.
The spokesperson also appealed to anyone who sees anyone acting suspiciously in the area to contact police.
The spokesperson added: “If anyone has any information which would assist the police please contact police at Strand Road station on 0845 600 8000. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
The spokesperson concluded: “Police would also like to thank the public for their co-operation during this policing operation.”
Today’s operation follows a warning given last week by police to members of the public in the Whitehouse area to be vigilant and to report any suspicious objects to police.
At the time, a police spokesperson revealed a thorough search had carried out following information that suggested there may be something suspicious in the area.
The spokesperson said officers went door to door talking to local residents and while nothing was found police asked should someone come across a suspicious object they do not touch it and contact police immediately
