THERE is shock and disbelief among staff at the Derry Journal group of newspapers where employees are facing losing their jobs.
Photographers and reporters are to be made redundant in the latest cull by British owners Johnston Press Journal group – the Derry Journal, Sentinel, Donegal Democrat and Donegal People’s Press – with up to 15 people expected to to go.
Johnston Press also own the Newsletter and a number of other newspaper titles throughout the North where jobs are also to go.
Voluntary redundancy packages have been on offer to staff for some time but staff fear compulsory lay-offs could be on the cards.
“It’s another sad sad day for the Journal,” said one insider.
Johnston Press has moved many of the traditional jobs at the Derry Journal to other areas, with printing in Portadown, advertising production moved to England and accounts handled in Scotland.
The Journal company also sold its Buncrana Road premises a year ago to move to smaller rented offices at Pennyburn Pass.
