City of Derry’s Declan Reed recorded an impressive win in the McConnell Shield Cross Country, hosted by East Antrim Harriers, run at Six Mile Water Park, Ballyclare.
From the off, Reed was challenged by a number of the strong field, including his team mate Alan Bogle and Scott Rankin from Foyle Valley AC.
The group stayed firm in the first two laps of the five mile race before it began to split and by the time they were passing through half way, Alan O’Hara, Brendan Teer, Declan Reed and Neil Johnston were looking like the main contenders.
However, in the closing stages, it was Reed who made a brave move at the front which proved to be a good decision, as none of the following trio were able to match the surge.
In the end, i claimed victory in 26:01 with Springwell Running Club’s up and coming star Neil Johnston produced an excellent final lap to take seconnd place in 26:08, a mere one second ahead of North Belfast Harriers’ Alan O’Hara, who completed the men’s top three in 26:09 (3rd place).
In the women’s three mile race City of Derry’s Marina Campbell came home third in a time of 18.25.
